This work was carried out in conjunction with the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and I.C.I. Biological Products (now Astra-Zeneca). In 1988 Aber Instruments was formed to develop the technology. The combination of biologists and electronics engineers working at Aber Instruments produced a range of high specification on-line instruments with worldwide patent cover, including the Biomass Monitor for biotechnology applications and the Yeast Monitor for use in breweries. Aber Instruments has now built up a wealth of experience with all aspects of biomass monitoring and has rapidly gained recognition for its expertise in the development of instrumentation for biotechnology and brewing. Simple, compact and reliable, it is used world wide, for spot checks or continuous moisture indication in still or flowing air or gas. Two alarm or control settings are easily set by the user and provide instant alarms on the large LCD illuminated back lit dial and on the green and red signal lamps. As the reading is specific to water vapour, calibration is accurate for different gases. Flow rate has no effect on the accurate measurement. Shaw modified molecular sieve moisture sensors connected to meter have 100 times the dry capacitance of other moisture sensors and an accuracy of better than one part per million moisture in very dry air or gas. A year later a new model appeared on the scene, MP3KDS. This instrument not only measured pressure but also measured velocity in m/sec with the aid of a pilotstatic tube which was a real bonus to the HVAC industry. In 1987 the auto zero micromanometer appeared on the market, which meant that the instrument will zero even when pressure was applied to the instrument and it was a runaway success.
