Thus came the founding of the company. The concept was to pull a small percentage of the system volume through an independent filtration system and return the filtered water to the system. Over time the water in the system would be cleaned to a very high level. In addition, since the filtration system was side-stream, a much smaller system could be used and down time/backwash time would have no impact on the cooling system flow. PEP actively marketed the benefits of clean water for improving the performance and reducing the operating costs of chilled water cooling systems. The product marketed was a self-contained side-stream filtration system, including linked valves, filtration system pump, and control panel. Backwashing was initiated by either a differential pressure switch, a timer, or a manual push button. Through the 1970s and 1980s, PEP gained a prominent leadership position in the cooling tower filtration market. It broadened its product offering to include the SMF fiberglass vessels, the HMF carbon steel high-pressure vessels, and the BMF high flow systems. In the 1990s, PEP moved from the Los Angeles area to Mooresville, NC. In 2000, PEP was purchased by a distribution company from South Carolina with the hope of expanding the business into more industrial markets. In 2001, PEP revolutionized the market with the introduction of the IMF high efficiency media filter. The IMF is a patented design, and represents the most innovative development since the inception of rapid sand filtration. Also, during this period, PEP invested in basin sweeping systems and a proprietary design sweeper jet, in addition to the design of a complete line of centrifugal separators. Finally, PEP moved into the Asian market by opening a sales office in Singapore to cover that emerging market. In keeping with our mandate for growth to come from new product development, PEP formed an alliance with Arkal Filtration Systems in 2004. This alliance brought innovative automatic disc screen filtration into our product line. The combined offering made PEP Filters, Inc. the manufacturer of the broadest range of automatic, self-cleaning, pre-engineered water filtration products in the world. PEP is looking to expand into more applications, including the pre-membrane and machine tool coolant industry. We are also planning expansion into Central and South America in the very near future.

This umbrella company would allow the separate companies to share engineering and technological resources to further expand market share and provide a superior product for our customers. The vision of combining such companies also allows each company to share in the financial backing of Dover, which will allow the companies to invest in the latest engineering and manufacturing resources. Wiseco Piston Inc. was the first acquisition by Dover in 1998 to begin building the framework for a larger company to dominate the performance Automotive/Powersports aftermarket. Wiseco Piston Inc. was founded in 1941 and is currently the #1 market leader in the USA for high performance pistons in the Powersports market (i.e. motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATV’s and personal watercraft). Wiseco has since expanded its base and now offers much more than just pistons, which makes then a once stop shop for aftermarket performance parts in the Powersports arena. Wiseco has also begun to expand into the automotive market and continues to gain share on custom and off the shelf pistons for import and domestic automotive applications. Realizing the future opportunities in the European market, Wiseco and its management team pursued ProX Inter BV based in Amsterdam within six months of joining Dover. This would allow the future PMi Company to expand easily across the world and gain even more market share in a fast growing foreign market. ProX was founded in 1975 and brought its extensive line of cast pistons, connecting rod kits, bearings, and clutch baskets to the table. Their buying power and business knowledge of the US and European markets would make the ProX team a valuable asset to the future organization. Having laid the groundwork for the Powersports market, Wiseco and their new management team put in place by the Dover Corporation set out to further expand in the Automotive market and were presented with an opportunity to acquire JE Pistons based in Huntington Beach California. JE Pistons was founded in 1947 and is the #1 market leader in the USA for high performance forged pistons in the automotive aftermarket. JE’s reputation in the automotive and racing industry made them a very valuable asset. This acquisition united the market leaders from Powersports and Automotive under one umbrella, providing a significant advantage over all competitors. Along with the acquisition of JE came the creation of Performance Motorsports Inc. in June of 1999. While each company within PMI will continue to operate independently, they are bound by a common strategy and an intense focus on serving customer needs in the performance aftermarket. The PMI story is not unique within Dover but is an excellent example of how a focused management group with a clear strategy has been able to build up a group of complementary businesses into a cohesive business unit providing an overall system solution to a growing customer base. K1 Technologies, which offers top quality Connecting Rods and Crankshafts at an affordable price was brought onboard in 2008. This arrangement will allow PMi to expand into the rotating assembly sector and provide a top quality alternative for our customers.

Today, Permabond Engineering Adhesives Ltd (Europe & Asia) and Permabond (Americas) provide technological solutions to engineers all over the world, with office and facilities in America, Asia and Europe, backed by a high-tech ISO 9001:2008 certified production plant in Europe. Products are designed and formulated by a team of highly qualified chemists and manufactured with state-of-the-art equipment. Permabonds laboratory team is well experienced in making custom formulations for specific and unique application requirements, as well as developing cutting-edge adhesive technologies for the market. Permabonds origin was in the UK, early in the 1960s. For years, manufacturers had had no choice but to rely on mechanical means of locking nuts and bolts. The high rate of failure due to equipment vibrations required a more reliable means of locking fasteners on equipment and finished goods. Chemists at Borden Chemicals (UK) seized this opportunity to develop a special anaerobic adhesive sealant that cured to a solid plastic when used between metal surfaces in the absence of oxygen. As predicted, these adhesives were well received by the manufacturing sector and business expanded rapidly. Avdel Ltd spotted this growth and quickly moved to purchase this business from Borden Chemical. As the business continued to grow, they moved to a larger facility on Woodside Road in Eastleigh. The market for adhesives and sealants that could meet the engineering needs of industry was apparent, even at this early date. Avdel invested heavily in Research & Development creating a number of anaerobic products to seal threaded pipes and fittings, retain bearings and press-fit parts and form in-place gaskets. Meanwhile, in Florida, United States, three men in the jewelry distribution business accidentally discovered cyanoacrylate adhesive and its ability to bond pearls into jewelry. They formed a company called Pearl Chemical and sold cyanoacrylate adhesive for this purpose. One of the three owners, came up with the idea to suspend a farm tractor from a crane, held by nothing except a drop of cyanoacrylate! The picture was used on some of the earliest cyanoacrylate packaging. National Starch & Chemical had been looking to enter the adhesives market to compete against Loctite. So it seized the opportunity to purchase the Pearl Chemical cyanoacrylate business, plus also the anaerobic adhesive business, Avdel. A packaging plant was established in 1976 in Englewood New Jersey and in 1977 production switched from Florida to Bridgewater (NJ). This involved massive investment in new equipment for producing both anaerobic and cyanoacrylate adhesives. Permabond was the name chosen in 1978 for the consolidated groups of anaerobic and cyanoacrylate adhesives business in the US and UK. With the additional cyanoacrylate technology purchased from Eastman (US), Permabonds were making inroads into not only the jewelry and machinery maintenance industries but also into automotive, electrical, medical and aerospace markets. Permabonds development chemists were rapidly making a number of break-through products in cyanoacrylate chemistry with ultra high-speed, metal bonding and low-odour grades. This same era saw the introduction of the first toughened cyanoacrylate, Permabond 737. Another key product innovation was Gaseal®, an anaerobic sealant used to seal leaking gas mains. New adhesive technologies quickly entered the arena - epoxies in 1979, two-part acrylic adhesives in the early 1980s and UV-curable adhesives in 1994. In 1996, chemical giant ICI took over National Starch & Chemical and its businesses, including Permabond. As is common with corporate giants, a change in executive leadership resulted in a decision to divest itself of the Permabond brand name and several product technologies along with other chemical companies. In 2003, the Permabond business was purchased by the Grossi family, involved in the Structural Adhesives Technology since the early 1970s. The new acquisition added extra value to Permabond in terms of investment, technology and manufacturing capacity, and a big injection of fresh enthusiasm from the new management team. Dr. Attilio Grossi, company President, has been an expert in the adhesives business for over 30 years. He is a highly-experienced chemist who spearheads the drive to continually keep Permabond products at the forefront of adhesive technology. Highly trained research and development scientists are based in the US, UK and at the main development facility in Italy. Their passionate focus on innovation provides a continuous stream of new products. New developments include new structural acrylics, high-temperature anaerobic and cyanoacrylate adhesives, and new epoxy adhesive hybrids - combining epoxy strength and performance with acrylic-type cure speed and toughening technology. Permabond in the future... The focus is very much a global effort with business plans to expa
