This brings the year-to-date total cargo volume to 8,927,585 short tons, up 5% compared to the same period last year.

In terms of container throughput, the Port of Houston handled 326,799 TEUs in February. The year-to-date container total reached 696,833 TEUs, representing a 2% increase year-over-year. In the first two months, loaded exports grew by 5%, and loaded imports grew by 3%, indicating stable demand for goods moving through the Houston Ship Channel.

Among the port's facilities, dry bulk and liquid bulk volumes grew by 28% and 31% respectively in February, while steel cargo volumes have declined by 27% year-to-date due to cyclical demand and global market factors. Over the past decade, the Port of Houston's container volume has achieved a compound annual growth rate of 7.2%, making it one of the fastest-growing major container ports in the United States. These projects aim to connect the Barbours Cut and Bayport container terminals to regional distribution centers, ensuring that transportation infrastructure keeps pace with freight demand.
