Wedoany.com Report on Mar 17th, The Government of Ontario, Canada, has announced the successful acquisition of a 205-kilometer stretch of rail track between North Bay and Washago by the end of February through a $138 million investment. This move represents a critical step in the province's plan to restore Northlander passenger rail service, aiming to provide more efficient transportation connections for northeastern Ontario.

This acquisition secures a dedicated rail corridor, which is expected to improve the punctuality and reliability of rail operations, create high-paying jobs, and stimulate economic growth in the northern region. The Northlander passenger service will have priority use of this track, but the purchase also supports the smooth passage of freight trains. Revenue generated will belong to the provincial Crown corporation, Ontario Northland.

By acquiring more track along the Northlander corridor, Ontario plans to connect northern and southern communities, enhancing the competitiveness and resilience of its infrastructure. This investment helps maintain critical rail assets, improve both passenger and freight services, and streamline freight processes in North Bay. Previously, freight trains had to be disassembled in North Bay and transferred to Canadian National Railway tracks for reassembly before continuing south; the new acquisition will optimize this operation.

The Ontario government has recently achieved several milestones supporting the return of Northlander rail service, including welcoming the first Northlander train set, completing over $100 million in rail infrastructure upgrades, and constructing the North Bay Rail Bypass. Once fully implemented, the Northlander will operate between Timmins and Toronto, covering approximately 740 kilometers with a branch line connecting to Cochrane, serving a total of 16 stations.
