Connecticut Unveils $5.5 Billion Transportation Improvement Plan, Rail Projects Receive Nearly 30% of Funding

This plan covers the period from 2027 to 2030 and aims to enhance the state's transportation infrastructure. The public can submit comments on this draft from May 13 to June 12 to participate in the planning process.

In terms of fund allocation, the draft allocates slightly less than 30% of the budget to transportation systems such as rail, bus, and ridesharing. Another $1.1 billion is designated for transit capital projects and operating costs, while $13.8 million is reserved for public transit operating assistance. Highway and bridge capital projects have been allocated $3.4 billion.

The rail and station work outlined in the draft includes several specific projects, such as track improvements on the New Haven commuter rail line operated by MTA Metro-North Railroad, rehabilitation of the Thames River Motor Vehicle Bridge, the Northeast Corridor, and Providence & Worcester Railroad tracks, as well as facility upgrades and fleet replacement work including platform replacement at New Haven Union Station and improvements to State Street Station.

Funding sources come from federal, state, and local levels. The Federal Transit Administration and the Federal Highway Administration are expected to provide $4.5 billion, the state government will contribute $932 million, and local funding will add an additional $45 million.
