en.Wedoany.com Reported - Hera Group has announced an investment of €50 million to expand the Casaglia geothermal heating plant and its district heating network in Ferrara, Italy, doubling the existing heating capacity from 16 MW to 32 MW. The project is expected to be completed by August 2026, which will double Ferrara's geothermal heating capacity.

Hera to invest EUR 50m to expand geothermal heating capacity in Ferrara, Italy

In 2020, Hera Group took over the Casaglia geothermal heating plant as part of a temporary consortium with Enel Green Power. The Ferrara City Council subsequently approved the expansion plan for Casaglia's heating capacity by the end of 2024.

Simone Rossi, Hera Group's District Heating Manager, stated that after the expansion, the share of geothermal energy in Ferrara's heating supply will increase from 44% to approximately 70%. The remaining heating will be provided jointly by gas boilers and waste-to-energy plants.

The Casaglia geothermal plant currently utilizes two production wells: the Casaglia 1 well at a depth of 1,100 meters and the Casaglia 20 well at 1,960 meters. The expansion plan includes drilling a new production well and a new reinjection well, as well as performing workover operations on the Casaglia 1 well. The relevant wells produce hot water at temperatures around 100°C.

Furthermore, Hera is advancing a zero-emission solution for Ferrara's heating system, planning to use geothermal energy to capture carbon dioxide from the exhaust gases of waste-to-energy plants and transport it to storage facilities being developed off the coast of Ravenna. This project, developed by Hera in collaboration with Saipem, has been selected for the EU Innovation Fund and has received €24 million in funding.
