en.Wedoany.com Reported - German UPM Specialty Materials and BASF have announced a collaboration to jointly advance the development of recyclable fiber-based packaging solutions. The partnership combines UPM's barrier papers and barrier base papers (such as UPM Solide Lucent and UPM Asendo) with BASF's Joncryl HPB (High Performance Barrier) resin coatings, aiming to provide packaging materials that meet stringent regulations for both food and non-food applications.

Driven by policies such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40, the industry is accelerating its shift towards recyclable design. This collaboration between UPM and BASF achieves high-performance, recyclable fiber-based packaging by matching paper with barrier technology. Mika Uusikartano, Senior Manager of Product Portfolio Management at UPM Specialty Materials, stated: "The transition to recyclable fiber-based packaging requires advanced barrier performance and close collaboration across the entire value chain. Our barrier papers are designed to support co-creation with partners, enabling new high-performance packaging applications." Rolf Alles, Sales Director for Resins EMEA at BASF, added: "UPM's premium paper grades for flexible packaging, combined with barrier coatings based on BASF's water-based Joncryl HPB resins, provide a credible reference approach for developing paper-based alternatives."
Currently, UPM's packaging papers are certified as recyclable according to standards such as CEPI v.2.0, and the BASF Joncryl HPB series has also been proven not to affect paper recyclability. Third-party testing of the complete structure is underway.
