Wedoany.com Report-Jan 13, TerraPower, the Bill Gates’ nuclear innovation company spearheading the development of the groundbreaking Natrium reactor, has announced a major milestone in the project’s progress. The company revealed that it has issued critical contracts for the construction of the reactor’s enclosure system (RES), a key step in advancing the development of the first advanced sodium-cooled fast reactor in the U.S.. The company has also signed agreements to guarantee access to high-assay low-concentration uranium to fuel the plant.

Among the key partners selected for the project is Ensa which will be responsible for the manufacturing the reactor head. Their role in producing the reactor head is crucial for the safety and operational integrity of the Natrium reactor, which is designed to produce 345 megawatts (MW) of power while integrating an advanced salt-based energy storage system capable of rapidly increasing output to 500 MW at moments of peak power demand.

Alongside Ensa, other suppliers have been brought on board to deliver critical components for the Natrium reactor. Doosan Enerbility will supply the core barrel, guard vessel, and internal supports, while HD Hyundai will manufacture the reactor vessel. Marmen will provide the rotating plug, a vital component for the operation of the reactor.

The Natrium reactor, currently under construction in Kemmerer, Wyoming combines a sodium-cooled fast reactor with an integrated salt-based energy storage system, offering a flexible, easy-to-deploy power solution that can help stabilize the grid and complement renewable energy sources. The reactor is expected to be online by 2030 and supply power to PacifiCorp’s electric grid.

Chris Levesque, president and CEO of TerraPower, emphasized the importance of these partnerships in bringing the Natrium reactor project to life:

"Assembling the right team of vendors to construct the first reactor speaks to TerraPower’s commitment to commercializing this technology and ensuring that advanced nuclear power plays a vital role in addressing the world’s growing energy needs"

With construction activities already underway at the Kemmerer site, TerraPower is poised to make history with the Natrium reactor, one of the most promising advancements in nuclear power technology.
