The hydrogen project comes with an investment exceeding €70m ($72.44m) and is anticipated to begin operations in the second half of 2026.

Wedoany.com Report-Feb 4, BP and Iberdrola have awarded a contract to Imefy, a Spanish manufacturer of dielectric liquids distribution transformers, to supply the main transformer for Spain’s largest green hydrogen plant.

The 25MW facility will be located at the bp refinery in the province of Castellón and is anticipated to commence operation in the second half of 2026.

Under the contract, Imefy will manufacture, supply, and oversee the assembly and commissioning of a three-phase power transformer, expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2026.

The transformer will have a capacity of 37MVA and a transformation ratio of 66/30kV.

This collaboration highlights bp and Iberdrola’s commitment to integrating Spanish companies into the renewable hydrogen value chain, fostering industrial and innovation opportunities.

The hydrogen project comes with an investment exceeding €70m ($72.44m), which will be provided by Castellón Green Hydrogen, a joint initiative by Iberdrola España and bp.

In subsequent phases, the green hydrogen produced could serve industries in the Valencian community that are challenging to decarbonise such as ceramics where the usual natural gas will be replaced.

The Castellón plant features a 25MW electrolyser powered by renewable electricity. The power purchase agreement with Iberdrola España will provide 200GWh/year from its photovoltaic and wind projects.

The plant will produce green hydrogen via water electrolysis, aligning with European Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) standards.

This will also aid in the transition of bp’s Castellón refinery into an integrated energy centre.

It is projected that 2,800tpa of green hydrogen could replace part of the grey hydrogen being used at the refinery.

This could potentially reduce CO₂ emissions by 23,000tpa, which equates to keeping 5,000 cars off the road over the same period.

The project benefits from €15m in funding from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan’s support programmes, with allocations from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU.
