en.Wedoany.com Reported - Fastweb+Vodafone has launched the FASTCloud Open Source platform, based on open-source technology, to accelerate the implementation of its sovereign cloud strategy. The new platform targets enterprises and public administration bodies, enhancing organizational technological autonomy by introducing the OpenStack architecture, reducing vendor lock-in risks, and expanding the selection and integration capabilities for different virtualization systems.

FASTCloud Open Source is hosted in the group's own data centers in Italy, complying with the National Cybersecurity Agency's guidelines for cloud-native services, aiming to provide high standards of security, reliability, and operational continuity. This move is intended to build a more flexible and modular digital infrastructure for customers, freeing them from single-vendor roadmaps and licensing models, while granting greater control over data, workloads, and configurations, and keeping critical assets within Italy.

The evolution of this platform is part of Fastweb+Vodafone's digital sovereignty strategy. The group previously launched the FastwebAI Suite, a generative artificial intelligence services and tools platform for enterprises and public administration bodies, and now strengthens the infrastructure module with FASTCloud Open Source. This module, serving as a localized, open, and manageable cloud, is designed to support critical workloads and AI applications, adhering to European rules on data, privacy, security, and governance.

Leveraging infrastructure entirely located in Italy, a proprietary cloud platform, edge computing and cybersecurity platforms, the Nvidia DGX SuperPod supercomputer operational since July 2024, and the Italian language model FastwebMiia trained on authoritative native data, the group becomes the first telecom company in Italy to launch sovereign AI-based solutions. FASTCloud Open Source provides organizations with cloud infrastructure to develop, integrate, and manage digital services and AI applications, consistent with the principles of the AI Suite: ensuring security, data control, information confidentiality, and technological choice autonomy.

Augusto Di Genova, Chief B2B Officer at Fastweb+Vodafone, stated that FASTCloud Open Source already meets the objectives of the European Commission's new regulatory proposals, including having physical infrastructure in Italy, open and auditable technology, independence from single vendors, and full workload portability.

This launch follows the European Commission's proposal of the Cloud and AI Development Act, which aims to introduce a unified European sovereignty framework for cloud services, accelerate European infrastructure capabilities, reduce dependence on operators outside the EU, and ensure that critical public sector functions are built on verifiable, autonomous solutions. FASTCloud Open Source is designed to provide customers with an enabling infrastructure to develop and manage workloads in a cloud environment that is localized and compliant with governance, security, and data sovereignty requirements.

The new architecture, based on open and standardized technologies, expands the options available to enterprises, supporting more flexible hybrid and private cloud models, enabling organizations to design digital environments that align with their internal policies, regulatory requirements, and operational continuity needs. The platform also maintains workload portability, which is crucial for enterprises and public administration bodies currently restructuring their infrastructure with a focus on multi-cloud, sovereignty, and AI.
