en.Wedoany.com Reported - Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has submitted a planning application to build a 1.2 million square foot super hospital to replace the aging Crewe Hospital. Most of the new hospital will be located north of the existing site.

The project has been accelerated due to the discovery of significant amounts of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in the structure of the 1970s-built hospital, affecting approximately 80% of the site.

The six-story main hospital building will be constructed by the IHP joint venture, comprising McAlpine and Vinci. The project also includes an outpatient cancer care center, a central sterile supply department, an energy center, plant buildings, and a multi-story car park with 1,000 spaces.

The scheme has entered the detailed design and business case approval phase, followed by procurement of major supply chain packages.

The new hospital is designed following the NHS standardized "Hospital 2.0" approach, aimed at accelerating delivery and reducing costs across the national program.

Four existing buildings on the edge of the site, totaling approximately 96,840 square feet, will be retained and refurbished, including the Emergency Department, Audiology and ENT units, a satellite outpatient clinic, and Ward Blocks 27/28.

The project team is led by WSP and Ryder Architecture, with support from Gleeds, WT Partnership, Mott MacDonald, Greengage, and PwC.

The project has also received full planning permission for the demolition of the South Cheshire Building and its temporary conversion into a 283-space car park to support preliminary works.

Broader planning permissions include the demolition of most existing hospital buildings, construction of new hospital facilities, a dedicated emergency vehicle access from Middlewich Road, a service access from Flowers Lane, and extensive landscaping works.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and continue until 2032. Following the opening of the new hospital, demolition of the remaining old hospital buildings will continue until 2034.
