This deployment follows what Microsoft and NHS England describe as "the largest AI trial of its kind in global healthcare," involving 30,000 NHS staff who gained early access to M365 Copilot. Early pilot data shows that, on average, each employee saves 43 minutes per day after using M365 Copilot, equivalent to approximately five working weeks per year—close to the average UK holiday entitlement. Through this broader rollout, the organization estimates millions of hours could be saved annually.

Preet Kaur Gill, UK Minister for Health Innovation and Safety, stated: "By rolling out Microsoft Copilot across the NHS, we can reduce this burden, free up clinicians' time, and help staff focus on what they do best—caring for patients." Microsoft emphasized that five key roles—clinical administration, ward clerks, medical secretaries, core services, and management—will benefit most from this AI deployment, with the software supporting writing, information retrieval, summarization, and analysis. The subscription will also include Copilot Studio, a tool for building AI assistants without requiring AI expertise.

Rob Thompson, Chief Digital, Data, and Technology Officer at NHS England, noted that large-scale adoption may bring its own challenges, with staff training and data literacy remaining major obstacles, and the organization itself must be prepared in terms of governance, policy, and strategy. Across the Welsh border, similar Microsoft 365 rollouts have demonstrated successful strategies, with areas such as Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, and Carmarthenshire achieving results by using internal AI champions.

NHS England plans to onboard 200,000 users within the first six months and up to 505,000 staff within a year through extensive training and adoption programs. Darren Hardman, CEO of Microsoft UK and Ireland, added that safely introducing AI into healthcare processes will help alleviate pressure, boost productivity, and support better decision-making across the health service.
