The feature is one of four new Health Guardian capabilities coming to these devices, designed to help users track changes in how their bodies process blood sugar.
This feature leverages the existing sensors on the watch, requiring no additional hardware. Heart rate data, sleep patterns, and daily activity information have already been continuously collected by Pixel Watch, and Google states that Insulin Resistance Trends will analyze weeks of physiological data to estimate whether insulin resistance is trending upward or downward, all without the need for blood tests. Users who are already mindful of their blood sugar status may catch signals that certain changes are occurring earlier as a result.
The rollout of this feature does not depend on the latest models. Pixel Watch 3 and subsequent models, as well as Fitbit Air, are expected to receive the update in September, and users won't necessarily need to purchase a Pixel Watch 5 to use it. In the arena of smartwatch blood sugar tracking, manufacturers take different technical approaches. Samsung employs the AGEs Index to provide wearers with metabolic health-related information, without generating direct blood sugar readings.
Normal blood sugar readings do not always rule out insulin resistance. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases notes that insulin resistance may appear before blood sugar levels rise; research published in Nature has also found that wearable data can help identify insulin resistance from physiological patterns. Compared with a single blood draw test, wearable devices can continuously track changes in daily life between two routine check-ups, and users don't need to separately initiate readings while the watch collects signals.
Interest in wearable blood sugar monitoring has extended from smartwatches to devices such as smart rings. With this move, Google offers a new form of metabolic tracking by analyzing existing sensor data through algorithms, while its native non-invasive blood sugar sensing remains in development. Within Google's health ecosystem, Health Connect already supports continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), allowing CGM readings to integrate with health tools; CGM displays dynamic changes in blood sugar, while Insulin Resistance Trends provides an independent stream of metabolic health information.
If a Pixel Watch flags a worsening trend, that signal can be compared with health information the user has already tracked; if the change persists, or if the user is already monitoring their blood sugar, they can consult a clinician. Watch alerts should not serve as the basis for medication or treatment decisions. The Pixel Watch 5 still cannot directly measure blood sugar, and Insulin Resistance Trends is not a substitute for a glucose meter or CGM. What it may do is give millions of smartwatch users earlier exposure to a less familiar metabolic signal, adding a thread for wearers to discuss health concerns with their doctors when worrying trends persist.
