en.Wedoany.com Reported - Australia inaugurated its first hospital-based medical discovery center, the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD), in Melbourne on June 11.

Located in the St Vincent's Fitzroy Health and Innovation Precinct, the center aims to accelerate the development of medical technologies by bringing together clinicians, researchers, industry partners, and engineers within the same facility.

The total project cost is $146.1 million (AUD 206 million), funded by $63.8 million (AUD 90 million) from the Victorian and federal governments, $61 million (AUD 86 million) from partner organizations, and additional philanthropic donations. The ACMD has 11 floors and provides approximately 4,500 square meters of research space.

The facility houses 31 laboratories, engineering workshops, 3D printing facilities, a human motion laboratory, a clinical simulation laboratory, and educational facilities, accommodating up to 900 researchers. Two floors are used by the University of Melbourne Clinical School, which trains up to 300 doctors annually.

The facility is operated in collaboration with St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne (SVHM), Australian Catholic University, Bionics Institute, RMIT University, St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research, Swinburne University of Technology, and the University of Melbourne.

Chris Blake, CEO of St Vincent's Health Australia, stated that the center will closely link research and clinical care within the hospital precinct. Nicole Tweddle, CEO of SVHM, noted that with the ACMD located in the Fitzroy Health and Innovation Precinct, SVHM will serve as a translational testing ground, applying innovations in medical technology, biotechnology, and digital fields. The center is named after Mary Aikenhead of the Sisters of Charity, founder of St Vincent's Hospital, and is situated on the site of the former Aikenhead Wing, which was used for nurse training.
