en.Wedoany.com Reported - LATAM Airlines Group, in partnership with French luxury expedition company PONANT EXPLORATIONS, has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by a total of 160 tons through the first allocation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for passenger charter flights.

The project involved 13 flights between Santiago, Chile, and Ushuaia, Argentina, allocating 22,400 gallons of SAF through the "Book and Claim" chain of custody method. This is LATAM's first emission reduction project related to passenger charter operations in collaboration with a specific client. Emission reductions were calculated based on the methodology established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) under its Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). The fuel used, Neste MY SAF™, is made from renewable raw materials and achieves a lifecycle emission reduction of 74.72% compared to conventional Jet-A1 fuel.

Thibaud Morand, LATAM Airlines' General Manager for Europe, Asia, and Oceania, stated that moving towards a more sustainable aviation industry requires commitment and collaboration across the entire value chain, and the partnership with PONANT EXPLORATIONS demonstrates that concrete mechanisms exist for clients to participate in emission reductions related to aviation operations. Wassim Daoud, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development at PONANT EXPLORATIONS, emphasized that this collaboration marks another step forward in the pursuit of more sustainable tourism, with the company participating in initiatives supporting transportation decarbonization and offering passengers a more environmentally friendly expedition experience.

This project is part of the LATAM Group's climate change management strategy, which is built around four pillars: fleet modernization, operational efficiency, promoting SAF usage, and carbon offsetting through regional strategic projects, with a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. In February 2026, LATAM was recognized by S&P Global as one of the best-performing airlines globally in terms of sustainability, ranking fifth worldwide and first across the Americas. The partnership with PONANT EXPLORATIONS demonstrates that SAF allocation and emission reduction mechanisms are already available for passenger charter operations, opening market space for collaboration between airlines and their corporate clients on decarbonization.
