Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 6, Limekiln Wind Farm in Scotland has reached full operation, boasting a 106MW capacity. Developed by Boralex, the site near Thurso in Caithness marks the company’s first active project in the UK. It features 24 Vestas V136-4.5MW turbines, each standing 150 meters tall to the blade tip.

Patrick Decostre, Boralex’s President and CEO, stated: “I am extremely proud of the Boralex team, whose expertise and dedication over the past few years have enabled us to reach this historic milestone for the company today. The UK is a key geography in achieving our growth and diversification objectives, and the operation of Limekiln Wind Farm enables us to strengthen our strategic position in the UK, while contributing to the global energy transition.”

Nicolas Wolff, Boralex’s Senior Vice-President and General Manager for Europe, added: “The operational phase announced today is a major step towards achieving our ambition of increasing our portfolio of ready-to-build and operational renewable energy assets in the UK, a market with high development potential, to 1GW by 2030. It is also the result of valuable consultation work with local communities carried out by our teams, who have been present on the ground since the very first stages of the project.”

Beyond clean energy, Limekiln will enhance biodiversity through a native species planting initiative and a peat restoration effort. It also offers an annual community benefit fund exceeding £500,000 throughout its lifespan. The wind farm secures a 15-year Contract for Difference (CfD) from the government, starting April 2028, and has a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Statkraft to bridge the gap from commissioning to the CfD’s start.

Generating enough electricity for about 100,000 UK homes annually—based on the national power mix—the project supports at least eight direct jobs and around 50 indirect roles. Boralex’s entry into the UK market with Limekiln aligns with its goal to expand renewable energy assets while benefiting local areas in Caithness and beyond.
