Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 8, Clariant has successfully launched its Megamax 900 methanol synthesis catalyst at European Energy’s e-methanol plant in Kasso, Denmark. This facility, one of the world’s first and currently largest commercial e-methanol plants, uses biogenic CO2 and green hydrogen to produce up to 42,000 tons of sustainable methanol each year. Clariant’s Applied Catalyst Technology (ACT) team provided hands-on assistance during the startup, managing catalyst loading, reduction, and activation. Despite the demanding conditions of converting CO2 into methanol, the Megamax 900 catalyst has demonstrated strong performance and reliability.

Clariant has recently announced the successful startup of its Megamax 900 methanol synthesis catalyst at European Energy’s e-methanol plant.

Georg Anfang, Vice President Syngas and Fuels at Clariant Catalysts, stated: “We are excited about the successful startup of European Energy’s pioneering e-methanol plant. The project is an important milestone in deploying and upscaling green methanol production and we are proud that our catalysts are already producing sustainable methanol at commercial scale. At Clariant, we are committed to catalyzing the energy transition – not only tomorrow but starting today.” This reflects the company’s dedication to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

Anders Brendstrup, Vice President at European Energy, remarked: “We are thrilled to have produced one of the world’s first e-methanol at our Kasso facility. This is a pivotal moment on the journey that started four years ago. We thank Clariant not only for providing their high-performance methanol synthesis catalyst but especially for their comprehensive on-site support. We look forward to continuing this successful partnership in future projects.” The collaboration highlights a shared focus on innovation and sustainability.

European Energy, established in 2004, aims to accelerate the shift to renewable energy through investments in solar, wind, Power-to-X, and carbon capture technologies. The Kasso plant represents a significant step in its mission to deliver fossil-free energy solutions. By integrating Clariant’s Megamax 900 catalyst, the facility efficiently produces green methanol, meeting the technical challenges of the process with high conversion rates and durability.

The Megamax 900 catalyst excels in the Power-to-Methanol project due to its stability and effectiveness, even under low temperature and pressure conditions. Its design ensures minimal by-product formation, enhancing both the environmental and economic benefits of the operation. The successful startup in Kasso marks a key achievement in sustainable methanol production, with European Energy and Clariant poised to expand their efforts in this field.
