Spanish government invests €19 million in Substrate AI to promote European sovereign AI development

This capital injection is part of a total €39 million capital increase involving both public and private investors, reflecting the public-private partnership model promoted by SETT. As one of the few European companies developing proprietary AI patents, Substrate AI aims to reduce technological dependence on third countries and consolidate digital sovereignty through this investment.

Headquartered in Madrid and Talavera de la Reina, Spain, Substrate AI employs over 200 people and serves more than 500 clients across industries including healthcare, industry, and technology. The company offers AI solutions ranging from software for creating and managing intelligent agents to developing proprietary cloud computing infrastructure, combining software, hardware, and infrastructure.

The platform developed by Substrate AI consists of four functional modules, including agent orchestration, governance and compliance, security and data residency, and enterprise integration. This architecture enables organizations to develop AI solutions that comply with regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act and the General Data Protection Regulation, ensuring security, traceability, cost control, and regulatory compliance.

In the healthcare sector, Substrate AI has launched an AI solution development center in Talavera de la Reina, in collaboration with the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha and local universities. Additionally, the company is working on a project with the University General Hospital Research Foundation of Valencia, aiming to improve patient access to medications and optimize dosages through AI.

This investment is made through the Next Tech instrument, funded by the European funds of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan. SETT also manages other initiatives, including the PERTE Chip focused on microelectronics and semiconductors, and the Spain Audiovisual Hub focused on the digitalization of the audiovisual industry. This investment aims to position Europe at the forefront of future AI technology development by advancing AI based on European intellectual property, data protection, and regulatory compliance standards.
