en.Wedoany.com Reported - On June 30, the Phase II project of the Tianfu Fusion Technology R&D Center of China Fusion Energy Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "China Fusion") officially commenced construction in the Fusion Science and Innovation City, Tianfu New Area, Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Organized and implemented by China Fusion, this is the first construction project since the company's establishment, marking a new stage in China's controlled nuclear fusion technology R&D, transitioning from experimental research to engineering development.

At the mobilization meeting for the project commencement, Zhang Libo, General Manager of China Fusion and President of the Southwestern Institute of Physics, emphasized that all participating units must keep their mission in mind, consolidate responsibilities, adhere to the principle of "safety first, quality foremost," strictly implement relevant project management requirements, allocate high-quality resources, enhance coordination efforts, and advance the project construction with high standards and high quality, ensuring the completion of construction tasks on schedule and with guaranteed quality, thereby laying a solid foundation for accelerating the achievement of self-reliance and control in China's fusion energy.

The Tianfu Fusion Technology R&D Center is positioned for the R&D of fusion reactor materials, testing and validation of key subsystems, and development of critical components, focusing on overcoming bottleneck issues in key technologies for fusion reactors. The overall planned land area is approximately 500 mu, with phased construction. Phase I was completed and put into operation in May 2026. The current phase focuses on the core challenge constraining fusion engineering applications—"radiation-induced structural material damage in fusion reactors"—and plans to build a comprehensive irradiation facility for fusion reactor materials, aiming to provide crucial support for the performance evaluation and engineering application of key materials.

As a significant infrastructure in China's fusion field, upon full completion, this project will become one of the largest and most functionally comprehensive fusion R&D bases in China, holding great significance for enhancing China's fusion engineering technology level and accelerating the achievement of self-reliance and control in fusion energy. The implementation of the project will also drive the localization process of nuclear technology equipment, promote the development of high-end equipment manufacturing and strategic emerging industries, and form an internationally competitive fusion technology innovation system.
