Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 10, The cruise division of Switzerland-based MSC Group has launched its new MSC Barcelona terminal in Spain, marked by the arrival of EXPLORA II, the second vessel from its luxury brand Explora Journeys. This terminal, located in Barcelona, opened with a design emphasizing environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

The facility incorporates advanced energy-saving features, such as solar panels and maximized natural lighting to reduce reliance on artificial sources. It also includes a rainwater collection system to support water needs for toilets and landscaped areas, helping to lower overall water consumption. The terminal has earned Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for its focus on energy efficiency and eco-friendly practices.

MSC noted that by 2027, the terminal will offer shore-to-ship power connectivity, allowing docked ships to shut off their engines and use the local grid, cutting port emissions significantly.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, stated: “Barcelona has been a strategic partner for MSC Group for more than four decades and for MSC Cruises for more than 25 years, and our commitment is unwavering. The new terminal is not just an investment in modern port infrastructure but demonstrates that we are aligned with the city’s strategy for a more balanced and sustainable model of tourism, all whilst bringing positive economic benefits to the region. We look forward to this new chapter with the Port of Barcelona as our guests from MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys enjoy the benefits that this modern, innovative and sustainable cruise facility brings.”

This summer, MSC Cruises plans to deploy five ships from Barcelona for Mediterranean voyages, including MSC World Europa, MSC Seaview, MSC Seaside, MSC Magnifica, and MSC Orchestra. EXPLORA II is also scheduled to make frequent stops at the terminal during the season.

In a separate development, MSC Cruises welcomed MSC World America, its third liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ship, delivered on March 27, 2025, at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The 333.3-meter-long vessel will be officially named on April 9, 2025, and begin operating from Miami on April 12, 2025, enhancing the company’s sustainable fleet offerings.

The MSC Barcelona terminal’s opening strengthens the company’s long-standing ties with the city while supporting environmentally conscious tourism and local economic growth.
