Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 26, The installation of onshore cables has commenced in Lower Saxony, Germany, for the BorWin4 and DolWin4 grid connection projects, marking the start of cable-laying activities, according to cable supplier Prysmian. These projects aim to deliver offshore wind energy from the North Sea to Lingen in southern Emsland.

Each grid connection system, BorWin4 and DolWin4, has a capacity of 900 MW. The DolWin4 cable route spans approximately 215 kilometers, including 60 kilometers offshore, while BorWin4 covers about 280 kilometers, with 125 kilometers offshore. The offshore cables will pass beneath Norderney Island before reaching the coast at Hilgenriedersiel. From there, underground cables will extend 155 kilometers to the Hanekenfähr substation in Lingen, where Amprion will integrate them into its transmission network.

The Lingen substation previously connected the Emsland nuclear power plant to the grid. Following the plant’s closure in 2023, 1.4 GW of capacity became available, which will now support the transmission of wind power to consumption centers in western and southern Germany, as stated by Amprion.

Construction for the DolWin4 and BorWin4 systems began in July 2022 on Norderney Island’s North Beach, with additional work starting in Lingen and Wietmarschen in 2023. In September 2022, Amprion contracted Prysmian to design, supply, install, and commission the land and submarine cables for both projects. Siemens Energy and Dragados Offshore were selected to provide the converter platforms.

Amprion’s website indicates that the BorWin4 and DolWin4 grid connections are scheduled to become operational in 2028. These projects will enhance Germany’s renewable energy infrastructure, facilitating the efficient transport of offshore wind power to meet regional energy demands.
