Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 26, The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved funding for the Azerbaijan Railway Company Decarbonization Project. The initiative will receive $250,000 from the Technical Assistance Special Fund and $1 million from the Smart Energy Innovation Fund to support its goals.
Azerbaijan is working to position itself as a key international logistics hub by 2025. The country aims to improve connectivity through the East-West and North-West Corridors while expanding trade routes via the Middle Corridor. These efforts are designed to strengthen economic resilience and foster regional integration. As freight transport volumes grow, the state-owned Azerbaijan Railway Company (ADY) is adopting international standards, prioritizing decarbonization to align with Azerbaijan’s climate commitments.
ADY’s decarbonization strategy includes transitioning from diesel to electric traction and increasing the use of renewable energy sources. This shift is expected to enhance operational efficiency and lower costs. “This transition will also generate co-benefits like improved air quality, reduced public health costs, and job creation in clean energy,” said an ADY representative.
By implementing these changes, ADY aims to contribute to Azerbaijan’s broader environmental objectives while supporting sustainable economic growth. The project is anticipated to create opportunities for cleaner energy solutions and improve the railway’s role in regional trade networks.
The funding from ADB will enable ADY to advance its decarbonization efforts, ensuring the railway system operates more sustainably. These improvements are expected to support Azerbaijan’s vision of becoming a prominent logistics hub while meeting global environmental standards.
