en.Wedoany.com Reported - INEOS Styrolution announced the closure of its polystyrene (PS) production facility in Channahon, Illinois, USA. The company's CEO, Steve Harrington, cited persistent margin pressure and industry oversupply as the primary reasons for this decision. After evaluating market conditions, industry utilization rates, plant cost structures, and long-term prospects, it was determined that continued operations in Channahon were no longer economically viable. He stated that the company remains confident in the long-term value of polystyrene, and that this decision reflects broader market dynamics rather than a reflection on the performance and dedication of the local team.

INEOS Styrolution will consolidate its North American PS production from three plants to two, with facilities in Decatur, Alabama, and Altamira, Mexico, continuing operations. This will improve the efficiency and reliability of the production network. The company stated it remains fully committed to the polystyrene business and will continue to serve customers across North America. Greg Fordyce, President of INEOS Styrolution Americas, said the company still believes in the value polystyrene brings to customers, with its versatility, performance, efficiency, and potential to support circular solutions making it an important material in a wide range of applications. Centralizing production is a necessary step to strengthen service capabilities and long-term competitiveness.

The Channahon plant has been in operation since 1960, with a capacity of approximately 400,000 metric tons. The Americas Regional Development Center (RDC) at the facility will be retained.
