Approved by the government on May 13, 2026, the scheme aims to enhance value addition, reduce import dependence, and contribute to India's greater self-sufficiency in the energy and chemical sectors by promoting surface coal and lignite gasification projects.

Following the scheme's approval, relevant guidelines were issued on June 25, 2026, and a Request for Proposal (RFP) was published on July 7, formally inviting eligible applicants to submit proposals.
