en.Wedoany.com Reported - OpenAI has decided to shut down its independent browser project Atlas, which will cease service on August 9. Launched in the fall of 2025, Atlas aimed to compete with browsers equipped with artificial intelligence features, but failed to convince users to switch browsers.

The primary reason for the project's failure was that convincing users to switch browsers proved more difficult than expected. Products such as Chrome, Safari, and Firefox have become deeply ingrained in user habits, and even with AI features, getting users to adopt a new browser requires significant effort. As a result, OpenAI has adjusted its strategy, integrating the solutions developed for Atlas directly into users' existing products.

As an alternative, OpenAI first launched a ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome. This extension can analyze the content of open web pages, answer text-related questions, generate summaries, or perform more advanced tasks without needing to switch to a separate application. This feature will directly compete with Gemini in Chrome. At the same time, OpenAI is developing a desktop version of the ChatGPT application, which will be equipped with more advanced web browsing capabilities, allowing users to access websites, log into services, download files, and perform various operations within the app without switching programs.

Shutting down Atlas is part of OpenAI's recent strategic adjustment. The company's management has decided to reduce the number of peripheral projects and concentrate resources on core products. Previously, the video generation tool Sora met a similar fate. The core of this strategy is not to build standalone applications, but to integrate AI features into the platforms users use daily, which is considered potentially more efficient than persuading users to change their habits.
