BluEnergies and TotalEnergies Advance Exploration Operations in Liberia’s Harper Basin

The two companies are working on blocks LB-26, LB-30, and LB-31 in the Harper Basin to reconfirm and enhance drilling prospects within these blocks. Related activities include the reprocessing of 6,167 square kilometers of 3D seismic data, executed by TGS, which is now over 50% complete with preliminary results obtained.

The primary objective of the data reprocessing is to enhance the seismic characteristics and AVO content of the original 3D seismic survey, completed by the same company in 2013. GeoPartners is conducting multibeam echo sounder (MBES) surveys within these blocks, covering an area of 4,045 square kilometers, with water depths ranging from 500 meters to 3,500 meters.

The company is using the R/V Gyre survey vessel, owned and operated by TDI-Brooks. Data acquisition began on June 19, 2026, and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026, allowing for early integration into refined 3D seismic data interpretation. The MBES aims to map underwater topography, helping to identify seabed anomalies and supporting the safe selection of future drilling locations.

Sergio Laura, Vice President of Exploration at BluEnergies, stated that the West African Transform Margin, where the Harper Basin is located, and its conjugate South American margin, are regions where basin-floor fan plays are being actively explored, developed, and produced. The recent busy activity of major oil companies acquiring licenses in deepwater areas across the West African margin confirms the effectiveness of BluEnergies' early actions in the Harper Basin (2023). Discoveries such as the Jubilee field in Ghana, the Venus field in Namibia, and recent finds offshore Côte d'Ivoire demonstrate the importance of basin-floor fan plays along the African margin.

The MBES identifies seabed topography and anomalous features and performs water column imaging to detect anomalies associated with hydrocarbon seepage through the seabed. Seabed geochemical sampling is conducted via piston coring to collect evidence of migrated mature hydrocarbons.

Additionally, heat flow measurements are underway to gather information on relative sediment temperatures and the thermal history of the undrilled Harper Basin. This project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026, allowing data to be integrated into the refined 3D data reinterpretation of numerous favorable zones within the blocks.

BluEnergies emphasized that all planned initiatives are focused on identifying drilling prospects and assisting in selecting optimal drilling locations. The West African Transform Margin, where the Harper Basin is located, and its conjugate South American margin, are described as regions where basin-floor fan plays are being actively explored, developed, and produced.
