en.Wedoany.com Reported - ULEMCo Ltd and Luxfer Gas Cylinders Ltd have officially launched a collaboration to jointly design and deploy integrated onboard hydrogen storage systems. This technical framework is primarily aimed at the heavy transport sector, including commercial vehicles requiring high-density energy storage, railways, maritime vessels, and off-road equipment.

Integrated Onboard Hydrogen Storage for Heavy Transport Systems

The scope of this collaboration covers heavy mobile applications where traditional battery-electric systems lack the required energy density or operational payload capacity. Specific technical use cases include deploying hydrogen systems in refuse collection vehicles, road sweepers, light commercial vehicles, and emergency response units. By replacing or supplementing diesel with hydrogen, fleet operators can maintain operational range and payload capacity while achieving route completion time stability and reducing tailpipe emissions. Previously deployed hardware includes a hybrid fuel refuse collection vehicle operating on a controlled combination of hydrogen and hydrotreated vegetable oil.

The primary industrial challenge in heavy transport is integrating alternative fuel systems without compromising vehicle weight parameters or continuous operation time. ULEMCo specializes in hydrogen system integration and powertrain adaptation, while Luxfer Gas Cylinders manufactures advanced high-pressure gas storage technology. This collaboration aims to address the mechanical complexity of packaging high-pressure gas systems within the stringent space constraints of existing heavy-duty chassis. Combining cylinder manufacturing scale with vehicle integration expertise provides a standardized approach to onboard energy storage.

The technical solution includes high-pressure hydrogen storage cylinders integrated into customized vehicle mounting architectures. Luxfer Gas Cylinders is responsible for the material engineering and production of high-pressure vessels designed to safely contain hydrogen under sustained mechanical and thermal stress. ULEMCo handles system integration, including fuel delivery architecture design, pressure regulation modules, and safety control systems that interface directly with the vehicle's powertrain and digital infrastructure. This division of engineering ensures that storage parameters meet stringent safety standards while operating reliably within the vehicle's broader energy ecosystem.

The integrated storage solution is designed for both vehicle retrofitting and new equipment manufacturing. During deployment, the hydrogen storage units are integrated into the existing physical framework of the heavy-duty chassis, requiring detailed structural analysis and safe routing of high-pressure lines to combustion or fuel cell systems. Both partners support engineering phases from initial prototype design to full commercial deployment, ensuring hardware can be integrated into commercial fleets without extensive modifications to the underlying vehicle platform.

This collaboration provides scalable hydrogen storage configurations, streamlining the manufacturing and retrofitting process for heavy-duty fleets. By standardizing the integration of onboard hydrogen cylinders, the partnership lowers the engineering barrier for operators transitioning from fossil fuels, ensuring predictable refueling mechanisms and structural reliability. Regarding the strategic promotion of this technology, ULEMCo Managing Director Amanda Lyne stated that combining the engineering capabilities of both organizations helps enhance the ability to deliver safely integrated hydrogen systems, thereby facilitating the transition to zero-emission transportation infrastructure.
