en.Wedoany.com Reported - Associated British Ports (ABP) has welcomed the 'Glovis Lighthouse', one of the world's largest car carriers, to the Port of Southampton. By capacity, this is the largest car carrier ever to call at the port, and it is also one of the largest and newest vessels of its kind globally.

The vessel arrived at Southampton's Solent Gateway facility on its maiden voyage, marking its first call in Europe. Paul Reeves, ABP Commercial Director, stated that the vessel's arrival demonstrates the benefits of ABP's investment in Solent Gateway and reinforces Southampton's position as a leading hub for the automotive industry and international trade.

The 'Glovis Lighthouse' can carry 10,800 Car Equivalent Units (CEU), with a length of 230 meters and a beam of 40 meters. This dual-fuel vessel can operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 24% compared to conventional fuels, with energy efficiency performance significantly exceeding current regulatory standards.

Mark Bath, Managing Director of Wainwright Bros & Co Ltd, the vessel's shipping agent, noted that the company was founded in Southampton in 1899 and has served as Glovis's designated port agent since 2010. This call showcases the enhanced capabilities of Solent Gateway, where the berth has recently undergone deepening and lengthening works to accommodate the new generation of larger car carriers.

As one of the UK's leading automotive gateways, Solent Gateway plays a role in connecting car manufacturers with international markets. This call marks another milestone for automotive operations in Southampton, highlighting the port's ability to accommodate the latest generation of car carriers. A plaque and key exchange ceremony was also held on board to commemorate the vessel's first call at the Port of Southampton and its first arrival in Europe.
