en.Wedoany.com Reported - Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal approved the first phase of a strategic project for a new hot-rolled steel coil production line at its Pecém plant in Ceará, Brazil, in July 2026. This initial phase involves an investment of 35 million Brazilian reais (approximately US$6.8 million) for engineering studies and technology development. If the project is fully implemented, the total investment is expected to reach 4.5 billion Brazilian reais (approximately US$872 million).

ArcelorMittal is a leading global steel and mining company headquartered in Luxembourg, with operations in over 60 countries worldwide, holding a significant position in steel supply for key industries such as automotive, construction, home appliances, and energy. The Pecém plant, located in the northeastern state of Ceará, Brazil, is an important production base for ArcelorMittal in the country, specializing in slab production with an annual capacity of 3 million tons. Currently, the plant's slab output accounts for approximately 9.5% of Brazil's total crude steel production and 22% of ArcelorMittal's production in Brazil.

This investment aims to upgrade the Pecém plant from a semi-finished product (slab) producer to a high value-added steel producer, including hot-rolled coils. The hot-rolled steel coils produced by the new line will primarily target downstream applications such as wheels, roofing panels, shipbuilding, civil construction metal structures, silos, and highway guardrails. The government of Ceará state stated that if the project is fully approved and implemented, it is expected to create approximately 3,000 jobs during the construction phase.

ArcelorMittal stated that this investment is a strategic step in evaluating a new expansion cycle for the company's operations and opens the way for adopting a new, more compact, and operationally efficient production technology in Latin America. Currently, the Pecém plant has completed the first phase approval for the project, with actual construction depending on the results of engineering studies and subsequent approval from the company's board of directors.

This investment is a key move for ArcelorMittal to deepen its presence in the Brazilian market and enhance the competitiveness of high value-added products. Once completed, the project will further diversify the product mix at the Pecém plant, consolidating its market position in the steel industry in Brazil and Latin America.
