en.Wedoany.com Reported - Enbridge Inc. has initiated a $4 billion natural gas pipeline expansion project in British Columbia, known as the "Sunrise Expansion Program." Approved by the federal government in April, the project aims to add 300 million cubic feet per day of transportation capacity to the province's natural gas transmission system.

The steel used for the Sunrise project is supplied by InterPro Pipe and Steel of Saskatchewan and qualifies as Canadian melted and poured steel. The federal government stated that the project will help secure natural gas supply for liquefied natural gas export facilities on the West Coast while meeting local demand. Enbridge holds a 30% stake in the Woodfibre LNG export terminal under construction in Squamish, British Columbia.

The Sunrise Expansion Program will add approximately 140 kilometers of new pipeline to Enbridge's existing 2,900-kilometer Westcoast Pipeline. Enbridge plans to construct 11 loop segments parallel to the existing pipeline and increase throughput through compression and other upgrades.

Last year, a coalition of 28 First Nations communities in British Columbia acquired a 12.5% stake in the existing Westcoast Pipeline. Enbridge previously stated that these communities are not obligated to participate in the expansion's equity but may choose to do so.
