With a total length of 13,669 meters, it is the second longest tunnel on the Kangyu section of the Xi'an-Chongqing High-Speed Railway and one of the key control projects along the entire line. As the only dovetail-shaped tunnel on the line, the breakthrough of the Qixingping Tunnel has created favorable conditions for subsequent construction. Currently, the Kangyu section of the Xi'an-Chongqing High-Speed Railway has fully transitioned to the installation of ballastless track, station construction, and four-power engineering phases.

The main line of the Kangyu section of the Xi'an-Chongqing High-Speed Railway spans 478 kilometers with a designed speed of 350 km/h, and is a key component of the national "Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal" high-speed railway network. Located in the Daba Mountains of eastern Sichuan, the Qixingping Tunnel features complex terrain. Builders adopted a "long tunnel, short construction" approach and innovated the "anchor instead of support" method to overcome construction challenges. With the completion of control projects such as the Qixingping Tunnel, the entire line construction has entered its final sprint phase.

The entire Xi'an-Chongqing High-Speed Railway is expected to be completed and open to traffic by 2028. By then, the railway travel time between Chongqing and Xi'an will be reduced from the current approximately 5 hours to about 2 hours, further improving the layout of the central and western high-speed railway network and promoting regional connectivity.
