en.Wedoany.com Reported - Tata Power has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to supply 324 MW of power from its 1,000 MW pumped storage project (PSP) at Bhivpuri, Raigad district, Maharashtra.
The project was awarded under SECI's tariff-based global competitive bidding (PSP-I). The tender aimed to supply 1,500 MW/12,000 MWh of power from domestic pumped storage projects under construction, with the project secured through an electronic reverse auction. A 40-year pumped storage power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed, and the project is scheduled for commissioning by 2029.
The project will be developed on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, providing 8 hours of storage capacity, enabling reliable power dispatch during peak demand periods. It will be connected to the 765/400 kV South Karanram CTU substation (Inter-State Transmission System ISTS).
This award further strengthens Tata Power's position in the long-duration energy storage sector. Long-duration storage is central to integrating India's rapidly growing solar and wind capacity into the grid, converting daytime surplus generation into stable, dispatchable, round-the-clock power. The awarded capacity is part of the 1,000 MW Bhivpuri PSP project, one of two large pumped storage projects Tata Power is advancing in the Western Ghats, the other being the 1,800 MW Shirvata PSP, with a combined capacity of 2,800 MW. This award aligns with Tata Power's broader clean energy strategy and its net-zero emissions target by 2045.
Tata Power's current clean and green installed capacity stands at 17.5 GW, including 9.6 GW of projects under construction, of which 2.8 GW is pumped storage. As India's peak power demand rises and the share of variable renewable energy increases, long-duration storage is becoming a cornerstone of grid flexibility and reliable round-the-clock green power. Tata Power holds a significant advantage in this sector due to its long-term presence in the Western Ghats and favorable hydrogeographic conditions.
