Wedoany.com Report-May 30, Eco Wave Power, a wave energy developer, has advanced its 1-megawatt wave energy station project in Porto, Portugal, by paying 50% of the grid connection fee to E-REDES, the Portuguese electricity distribution operator. The company also accepted E-REDES’ Connection Conditions, outlined in a letter dated November 27, 2024, with a proposed grid connection date in 2026, pending final permits, construction, and regulatory approvals.

The 1-megawatt station is part of a 20-megawatt concession agreement with the port authority APDL. In March 2024, the final TURH permit was granted, enabling construction to begin, with a performance bond ensuring completion within two years. In August 2024, Eco Wave Power initiated the project with a visit to “The Gallery,” an underground tunnel beneath the breakwater in Porto, which will house the wave energy conversion unit and serve as an underwater wave energy museum and public education center. Infrastructure upgrades, including sand and debris removal, waterproofing, and structural reinforcements, started in February 2025.

Inna Braverman, Eco Wave Power’s Founder and CEO, stated: “Portugal is not only a global leader in renewable energy—it is now leading the way in wave energy commercialization. By securing grid connection for our first 1MW station, we are turning vision into reality.” She added: “This is more than an infrastructure milestone—it’s a signal that wave energy is moving from concept to contribution. Together with our incredible partners in Portugal, we are building a new era of clean, predictable power sourced directly from the ocean.”

The project is managed by Juan José Gómez, appointed as Power Station Manager, with Portugal-based MOQ Engineering handling final design and load assessments using advanced modeling tools. In January 2025, MOQ Engineering was contracted to finalize the design and load calculations, advancing the project toward its 2026 launch. Eco Wave Power established its subsidiary, EW Portugal - Wave Energy Solutions, in September 2020 to oversee licensing for the 20-megawatt project.

The Porto initiative supports Portugal’s renewable energy goals by providing clean, sustainable power for domestic consumption. Eco Wave Power is also developing wave energy projects in Taiwan and the Port of Los Angeles, with plans to announce additional international ventures soon, reinforcing its commitment to expanding the global wave energy market.
