The new order doubles the fleet currently in production to 50 trains, with at least 60% of the train's value required to come from local sourcing.
This additional order exercises an option under the original contract, which was signed in 2021 and covered the first 25 trains. The new 25 trains will be manufactured at Alstom's facility in Victoria, and the manufacturer stated that the project will sustain hundreds of skilled jobs across the Melbourne metropolitan area and other regions of the state.
The X'trapolis 2.0 is a six-car electric commuter train developed by Alstom in partnership with the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning. Derived from the Adessia commuter train platform, it offers a total capacity of up to 1,225 passengers. The train features a gangwayed interior allowing passengers to move between carriages, along with wider doors to reduce boarding and alighting times. Accessibility features include 20 wheelchair spaces, dedicated areas for prams and bicycles, semi-automatic ramps, tactile paving, and an auditory assistance system. Alstom has also improved the interface between train drivers and passengers.
Under the contract, at least 60% of the train's content must be sourced from Australia, a measure aimed at supporting the rail industry and the local supply chain. Alstom stated that the new order will help preserve Australia's capability to design and manufacture trains domestically. These 25 trains will be produced in Victoria, at the same manufacturing site as the initial contract trains. The manufacturer believes that the increased scale of the project will bring greater stability to local suppliers and secure jobs in the rolling stock industry.
The first X'trapolis 2.0 entered commercial service in May 2026. The remaining trains from the initial order will be progressively introduced following testing and acceptance, replacing older commuter trains that have been in service since the early 1980s. To date, Alstom has delivered more than 48,000 carriages for commuter trains globally, with its rolling stock operating on around 60 networks and carrying over 20 million passengers daily.
