en.Wedoany.com Reported - Daewoo Engineering & Construction announced on August 7 that the SMDC consortium, in which it participates as the main contractor, has been selected as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the "Rovuma LNG Phase 1" project, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) development project in Mozambique. Daewoo E&C has received a letter of intent (LOI) to carry out preliminary engineering, procurement, and constructability review tasks as the main contractor.

The project will be executed by the SMDC consortium, which consists of Italy's Saipem, the United States' McDermott, and China's CPECC. Daewoo E&C plans to leverage this opportunity to demonstrate its capability to lead the entire project as the main contractor.

The Rovuma LNG Phase 1 project aims to build liquefaction facilities with an annual production capacity of 18.6 million tons of LNG using Mozambique's offshore gas fields. The project adopts an environmentally friendly electric drive method, using electric motors instead of gas turbines to power the liquefaction facilities, and will also include the construction of a large-scale combined-cycle gas power plant and supporting facilities for electricity supply.

The project owner's representative, ExxonMobil Mozambique, plans to finalize the final investment decision (FID) by the end of this year. Receiving the letter of intent is a prerequisite for commencing preliminary work, including refining the basic design and procuring major equipment and materials before the main construction phase. The final project scale and Daewoo E&C's specific contract amount will be determined upon the signing of the main contract.

Daewoo E&C stated that this award is a recognition of its ability to lead projects on an equal footing with global EPC giants. The company plans to commence full-scale construction work by the end of the year, alongside the signing of the main contract.
