The fire broke out on August 1 outside the railway boundary and spread, causing extensive damage to signaling systems, communication facilities, overhead line equipment, and power supply infrastructure. Network Rail subsequently organized engineering teams to carry out round-the-clock repairs for seven consecutive days.

Following the fire, parts of the affected section were temporarily closed, disrupting passenger and freight services on South Wales railways. Within hours of the incident, engineering teams restored partial service on the line, allowing trains to operate on a reduced schedule, while the remaining sections stayed closed for construction.

The repair effort involved replacing approximately 11 kilometers of cable and 300 meters of cable troughing, as well as removing and replacing damaged signaling, communication, overhead line, and power equipment. During the works, specialist teams carried out continuous line inspections, equipment installation, and system testing to restore power supply for electric trains and railway signaling functions.

The National Rail Enquiries platform confirmed that the infrastructure repairs have been completed, with trains running to their normal timetable since August 8. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the British Transport Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
