Wedoany.com Report-Jun 6, On June 5, 2025, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto launched the first corn export from Bengkayang district, West Kalimantan, to Kuching, Malaysia. The event, part of a nationwide corn harvest celebration, marked a milestone for the region’s agricultural sector. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Widjaja stated: “The president will personally oversee the shipment of the crop to Kuching, Malaysia.”
The ceremony, attended by National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and ministry representatives, highlighted Bengkayang’s entry into international markets with its first corn export. General Prabowo visited the district to evaluate harvest preparations and ensure smooth export operations. This initiative underscores West Kalimantan’s growing role in Indonesia’s agricultural economy.
During the event, President Subianto inaugurated the Pangan Merah Putih corn warehouse and drying facility in Sebalo village, Bengkayang, on Jalan Bukit Tinggi. The facility can store up to 5,000 tons of corn and process 300 tons daily, serving as a vital hub for storage, processing, and distribution. It aims to enhance the economic value of local agriculture by supporting farmers and streamlining operations.
The export to Malaysia aligns with Indonesia’s strategy to expand its agricultural presence globally. The Ministry of Agriculture reported plans to export 27,000 tons of corn in June 2025, reflecting the country’s increasing agricultural capacity. This initial shipment from Bengkayang paves the way for regular exports, fostering stronger economic ties with Malaysia and supporting Indonesia’s food security goals while empowering local farmers.
Indonesia’s corn export potential was evident as early as 2022, with a surplus of 3 million tons, as noted by the State Logistics Board (Bulog). Bulog directly purchases corn from farmers and is expanding export efforts through investments in drying centers, further strengthening the agricultural supply chain.
