Malaysia's U Mobile Partners with OpenAI to Advance 5G and Enterprise AI

Under the agreement, U Mobile gains early access to OpenAI's latest frontier models, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) providing cloud infrastructure and technical support. This marks OpenAI's first partnership with a Malaysian telecommunications operator.

The initial phase of the partnership will cover internal process automation, software development, data analytics, and data science. U Mobile will also evaluate AI applications in network operations, cybersecurity, brand campaigns, and digital content. The announcement did not specify which OpenAI models will be deployed initially, nor did it provide a rollout timeline or disclose investment amounts. It also did not indicate which applications will move from testing to production first.

This partnership is part of U Mobile's plan to build an AI-empowered telecommunications operator. The company is building a next-generation 5G network in Malaysia and plans to combine network infrastructure with AI tools for operational and commercial functions. U Mobile Chief Information Officer Neil Tomkinson stated that the company believes AI is most powerful when it enhances human potential, and intends to use AI to support employees in areas such as decision-making and daily work. Fred Groen, Head of GTM for Mid-Market at OpenAI Asia Pacific, said that together with U Mobile and AWS, they will explore how AI can support every aspect of U Mobile's business—from helping employees work more effectively and creating better customer experiences, to helping enterprises innovate and strengthening cybersecurity.

In terms of network operations, U Mobile has not disclosed which network management functions will be automated or supported using OpenAI models. The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) has identified network lifecycle automation, resource management, and security as areas where telecom operators can apply AI, with use cases including traffic forecasting, fault identification, predictive maintenance, and dynamic allocation of network resources. OpenAI has documented a use case where Deutsche Telekom and technical partners used AI to adjust mobile network resources throughout the day based on demand fluctuations. U Mobile did not specify whether similar network management applications would be part of its deployment.

AWS will provide cloud infrastructure and technical expertise for the jointly developed AI applications, including support for developing and scaling applications based on OpenAI models. OpenAI models are also available through Amazon Bedrock, AWS's managed service for building and running generative AI applications. The announcement did not specify whether the deployment will use Bedrock, nor did it reveal the planned technical architecture. AWS has also listed network troubleshooting as a generative AI application direction for telecom operators, covering fault detection, issue diagnosis, recommended corrective actions, software development, and testing.

The partnership extends into the enterprise domain. OpenAI will become the anchor partner of U Mobile's Enterprise Innovation Platform, which aims to help enterprises, startups, developers, and academic institutions develop, test, and validate AI applications. U Mobile launched the platform in January 2026, with AWS, Huawei Malaysia, Palo Alto Networks, and Qualcomm as initial technology partners. On August 6, 2026, U Mobile officially opened its physical EIP center. The facility is built around U Mobile's 5G-Advanced infrastructure and provides organizations with an environment to develop, test, and demonstrate applications before broader deployment. Demonstrations at the launch included AI-based visual surveillance, digital twins using 5G, IoT and AI for asset management, 5G-connected drones for inspection and monitoring, and robotics. U Mobile stated that the facility will also support proof-of-concept, validation work, and pilot projects.

The platform is open to enterprises, SMEs, startups, academia, and public sector organizations, including those that are not existing U Mobile customers. OpenAI's frontier models will be made available to these institutions through the platform. The two companies will also explore future AI products, services, and partnerships for consumers and enterprises, without disclosing specific products, release dates, or commercial terms.

Cybersecurity is another area covered by the agreement. The two companies plan to research AI applications in threat detection, incident response, and network resilience, while taking measures to ensure the secure deployment of AI within U Mobile and its enterprise ecosystem. OpenAI has developed cybersecurity capabilities for vulnerability discovery, analysis, patch development, testing, and remediation. Its GPT-5.5-Cyber is designed to analyze large codebases, identify security-related components, validate potential vulnerabilities, and support patch development and testing. The announcement did not specify which OpenAI cybersecurity models or tools U Mobile will use. Palo Alto Networks is already one of the EIP technology partners, but no joint cybersecurity project involving U Mobile, OpenAI, and Palo Alto Networks has been announced. The announcement also did not disclose performance targets, projected cost savings, deployment volumes, or dates for commercial AI services.

U Mobile Chief Executive Officer Wong Heang Tuck and OpenAI's Groen launched the partnership at an event attended by Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. U Mobile Chief Information Officer Tomkinson and Chief Technology Officer Woon Ooi Yuen also attended the event.
