CIP's 500 MW Battery Energy Storage Project, Europe's Largest, Begins Operations

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 12, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) disclosed that the Coalburn 1 battery energy storage project in Scotland, UK, has entered commercial operation. The project has a capacity of 500 MW/1 GWh with a two-hour storage duration, making it the largest battery energy storage system currently in operation in Europe.

Located on a former coal mining site in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, Coalburn 1 utilizes lithium-ion battery energy storage technology and is connected to the UK transmission network. The project can store electricity when supply is abundant and release it to the grid during periods of rising demand or declining renewable energy output, providing peak shaving and flexibility services to the UK power system.

The project's energy storage system is supplied and integrated by e-STORAGE, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar. The company previously announced a supply scale of 500 MW/1170 MWh for the DC-side energy storage system, while the project's commercial operation capacity is stated as 500 MW/1 GWh.

Coalburn 1 is the first of three transmission-level grid battery energy storage projects developed by CIP in Scotland to enter commercial operation. The other two projects are Coalburn 2 and Devilla. Once all three projects are fully completed, their combined power capacity will reach 1.5 GW, with a total energy storage capacity of 3 GWh.

Coalburn 1 has signed a 10-year power trading and optimization agreement with SSE Energy Markets and has secured a 15-year capacity market agreement. RES is responsible for project asset management.
