The initiative was announced at the Digital Government Summit in Freetown, highlighting its use of renewable energy solutions from CrossBoundary Energy to power essential infrastructure.

CrossBoundary Energy is installing solar photovoltaic panels, battery storage, and backup generators to achieve 99.9% network uptime while minimizing fossil fuel use and emissions. The company is also funding the construction of five towers to accelerate the network’s expansion across Sierra Leone. Oliver Benham, Director of Operations for Telecom Solutions at CrossBoundary Energy, stated: “Our approach maximizes uptime and boosts renewable energy penetration, significantly reducing diesel generator use. This provides telecom operators like Zoodlabs with a reliable, affordable, and cleaner power source that’s independent of the utility grid or fossil fuels.”

The 5G network will deliver faster data speeds, lower latency, and greater device connectivity, transforming Sierra Leone’s digital landscape. With broadband penetration currently at just over 20%, the network aims to enhance digital inclusion, improving access to services for businesses and individuals, particularly in Freetown. David Kapkima, CEO of Zoodlabs, emphasized: “5G isn’t just about faster phones; it’s a foundational technology for smart cities, autonomous vehicles, remote healthcare, and IoT-enabled businesses. The initial rollout includes towers in Freetown, with plans to extend 5G coverage nationwide.
