en.Wedoany.com Reported - UK engineering firm Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has secured a £46.5 million contract to build key infrastructure for the 45MW Carno 3 wind farm in Powys. The company has been appointed as the main contractor for the 10-turbine project by Carno 3 LLP, a joint venture between Amegni Renewables and Gresham House. Work has now commenced, with the wind farm expected to be completed by autumn 2027.

The scope of the contract covers grid reinforcement works, including the installation of 20 kilometers of new underground cable between Welshpool substation and a connection point south of Abermule, strengthening part of SP Energy Networks' existing 132kV mid-Wales grid system. Jones Bros will also construct turbine foundations, a new on-site substation and control building, carry out cable installation works, and upgrade over 4.4 kilometers of existing access tracks while constructing 4.7 kilometers of new ones.

The total project cost exceeds £100 million, and once operational, the renewable electricity generated annually is expected to meet the demand of approximately 46,000 homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 65,000 tonnes. Jones Bros plans to utilize the local supply chain wherever possible, with a project team of up to 90 people, including apprentices.

Amegni Renewables developed the Carno 3 project and has awarded contracts totaling over £50 million to Welsh businesses and individuals. The construction scope also includes over 350 hectares of new habitat improvement and peatland restoration measures, upgrades to the local public road network, and a community benefits package totaling over £3.5 million throughout the wind farm's entire lifecycle.

The three wind farms at Carno are operated locally by Amegni, and once fully operational, they will feature 78 wind turbines with a combined installed capacity of nearly 100MW, generating total annual community benefits of £250,000.
