Swiss Alpiq acquires 103.5 MW / 238 MWh battery storage in Germany

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Swiss energy company Alpiq has acquired the BESS Bollingstedt battery energy storage system in Bollingstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The facility has an output of 103.5 MW and a storage capacity of 238 MWh. Developed and built by the German-Norwegian company ECO STOR, it was commissioned in June 2025 and is one of the largest battery energy storage systems in Germany. The parties did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction.

This acquisition gives Alpiq its first operational large-scale battery storage asset in Germany—one of Europe's most important markets for flexibility solutions—and complements its project pipeline. Amédée Murisier, Head of the Assets Division and member of the Executive Board at Alpiq, stated that BESS Bollingstedt aligns closely with the company's existing asset portfolio, enhancing Alpiq's ability to provide flexibility in the areas of the power system where value is highest, and reflecting its strategic direction in expanding into the European battery storage market. In addition to its existing project pipeline, the company will further explore opportunities for operational battery storage systems in Germany.

Alpiq stated that flexible storage assets such as battery storage and pumped storage hydropower are key components of the future energy system. Such facilities facilitate the grid integration of renewable energy, help balance electricity supply and demand, strengthen grid resilience, and enhance supply security, playing a critical role in the energy transition.

BESS Bollingstedt is the third and currently largest operational battery storage system in Alpiq's portfolio, alongside BESS Cheviré (100 MW) in Saint-Nazaire, France, and BESS Valkeakoski (30 MW) in Finland. Additional battery storage projects with a total installed capacity of more than 250 MW are currently under construction or nearing commissioning, while projects in Italy and Switzerland are in the development phase.

In early July 2026, Alpiq acquired a 90% majority stake in Harmony Energy, a pan-European battery storage developer and operator with a multi-gigawatt project pipeline in the UK, France, Germany, and Poland. The acquisition of BESS Bollingstedt adds a revenue-contributing operational asset to this pipeline and gives Alpiq direct entry into the German battery storage market.

Alpiq and ECO STOR have an established long-term partnership. In November 2025, the two companies signed a long-term tolling agreement for the Schuby BESS in northern Germany, a facility also built and operated by ECO STOR. The acquisition of BESS Bollingstedt reflects Alpiq's confidence in ECO STOR's project development capabilities, technical expertise, and understanding of economically viable storage solutions, and demonstrates a shared recognition that high-performance battery storage systems are an essential component of a sustainable energy system.
