en.Wedoany.com Reported - Harbert Management Corp., a Birmingham, Alabama-based private alternative asset management firm, announced this week the acquisition of Mid-Georgia Cogen, located in Kathleen, Georgia. The facility is an approximately 323 MW dual-fuel combined-cycle cogeneration plant.

Located near Robins Air Force Base south of Macon, the plant has been in operation since 1998 and has long served as a peaking plant for Georgia Power. According to the company's announcement, the plant recently signed a new 20-year power purchase agreement with the utility, effective in 2028.

The plant also supplies thermal energy to the adjacent Frito-Lay manufacturing facility for food frying, cooking, and space and water heating. The transaction was approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission last month. Representatives for Harbert did not disclose the purchase price or transaction details.

Claude Estes, head of Harbert Power, said in an emailed statement to Utility Dive that the company is excited about the Mid-Georgia acquisition and focused on helping its state partners address significant load growth. Southern Company, the parent of Georgia Power, recently disclosed that it has signed large-load contracts totaling 17 GW across its entire service territory.

According to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) filings, the Mid-Georgia facility is equipped with two 107 MW Westinghouse Type 501 D5A gas turbine generator units, two unfired heat recovery steam generators, one extraction-condensing steam turbine generator rated at 105 MW, one back-pressure steam turbine generator rated at 1.2 MW, a cooling tower, a standby boiler, and associated equipment.

Harbert Power stated that over the past four decades, it has deployed more than $13 billion in capital across renewable energy, dispatchable generation, and distributed generation; as of July 31, its regulatory assets under management totaled approximately $7.9 billion.
