Japan's JFE Engineering manufactures first domestically produced offshore wind monopiles for 315MW project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Tokyo-based JFE Engineering Corporation has produced what it says are Japan's first domestically manufactured offshore wind farm monopiles, which will be used for the 315-megawatt Oga–Katagami–Akita offshore wind project. The project is owned by a consortium comprising JERA Nex BP, J-POWER, Tohoku Electric Power, and Itochu.

In December 2025, JFE Engineering was awarded a foundation manufacturing and transportation services contract by Kajima Corporation. Kajima signed with the project developer in October 2025 to handle the manufacturing, procurement, transportation, and installation of the wind turbine foundations.

JFE Engineering stated that these monopiles were manufactured at its Kasaoka Monopile Plant. The plant was completed in March 2024 and is currently Japan's only monopile manufacturing facility.

The monopiles have a maximum diameter of approximately 11 meters, a length of about 80 meters, and a weight of roughly 2,000 tons.

The Oga–Katagami–Akita project is one of Japan's first fixed-bottom offshore wind projects to advance through a public tender process in general sea areas, and one of the country's first to adopt wind turbines exceeding 10 MW. The project's 21 turbines will feature the Vestas V236-15.0 MW model.

Turbine deliveries are expected to begin in 2026, with installation and commissioning scheduled for 2027, and the project is planned to achieve full grid connection and commercial operation in 2028.
