Phase I of India's Veligonda Irrigation Project Officially Commissioned

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 31, Phase I of the Poola Subbaiah Veligonda Irrigation Project in Andhra Pradesh, India, was officially commissioned, with the project's intake regulation facilities put into operation, allowing Krishna River floodwaters to flow through the conveyance system into the Nallamala Sagar reservoir. Phase I of the project diverts water from the Srisailam reservoir near Kollam Vagu through two tunnels, each approximately 18.8 kilometers long.

The total estimated investment for the Veligonda project is approximately INR 102 billion, with works valued at about INR 79.83 billion implemented as of before this commissioning. The entire project is designed to divert 53.85 TMC of floodwater from the Krishna River, conveying it through the Nallamala hill conveyance system into Nallamala Sagar.

Phase I of the project provides irrigation coverage of approximately 119,000 acres and is configured with water supply capacity for around 400,000 people. The overall project plans an irrigation area of approximately 447,000 acres, covering regions including Markapuram, Prakasam, Nellore, and Kadapa. One day prior to the commissioning of Phase I, trial runs for water conveyance from Kollam Vagu through the tunnels to the project had been completed.
