Etihad to Operate 8 North American Routes in 2026 with Nearly 1 Million Seats

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Etihad Airways will operate a North American network covering eight destinations in the United States and Canada in 2026, offering nearly one million round-trip seats to and from North America throughout the year—the busiest North American schedule in the airline's 23-year history. This capacity represents a 25.7% increase over 2025 and is more than 20% above the previous record of over 825,000 seats set in 2017.

The network builds on current services to Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, New York, Washington, and Toronto, with Calgary joining at the end of October—the first direct route between the Middle East and Western Canada.

Under the plan, Etihad Airways will offer a total of 998,282 round-trip seats between the United States and Canada in 2026 using its widebody fleet. Flights from Abu Dhabi (AUH) to six U.S. destinations—Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)—are operated by Airbus A350 or Boeing 787-9 aircraft, as the airline no longer deploys the Airbus A380 on U.S. routes. Frequencies are as follows: Atlanta daily (A350-1000), Boston six weekly (787-9), Charlotte four weekly (787-9), Washington daily (787-9), New York two daily (A350-1000), and Chicago two daily (787-9).

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) maintains a daily Airbus A380 service, unchanged since the aircraft type was introduced on the route in June 2025. The second Canadian destination, Calgary International Airport (YYC), is scheduled to launch on October 25, 2026, with four weekly flights operated by the Boeing 787-9. Etihad Airways' 2026 North America seat count marks its fourth consecutive year of double-digit growth in the market and is 60 times the 16,655 round-trip seats offered when it first flew to New York in 2006. Capacity climbed steadily during the early expansion phase: surpassing 250,000 seats in 2010, exceeding 500,000 in 2014, and reaching a peak of 826,856 in 2017. The airline then scaled back its North American operations, dropping to 706,696 in 2018, 556,682 in 2019, and plunging to under 230,000 in 2020, before gradually rebuilding to current levels.

In the upcoming northern winter season, the airline will adjust frequencies on select routes: Atlanta will reduce from daily to five weekly starting December 13; Chicago will decrease from two daily to 12 weekly from October 25; and Charlotte will increase from four weekly to daily from December 16.

Despite record capacity, Etihad Airways' U.S. network remains smaller than those of Gulf rivals Emirates and Qatar Airways, each of which serves around a dozen U.S. airports. Etihad currently has no presence in Florida, has not returned to Texas since the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) route was discontinued in 2018, and remains absent from the U.S. West Coast following the suspension of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) service in 2020.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) was previously served by the airline but was discontinued in 2017 after three years of operation. Among these three candidate destinations, Dallas/Fort Worth is perhaps the most likely to return. The airline's original reason for ending the Dallas/Fort Worth route was the breakdown of its codeshare agreement with American Airlines—an agreement that has since been restored.

Entering Florida would make Miami International Airport (MIA) an obvious candidate, and launching flights to American Airlines' hub at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) or Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is equally feasible. According to Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves, the airline plans to roughly double its U.S. capacity within five years and add three to five new U.S. destinations during that period.
