CPMZ launches Phase II expansion of pipeline, targeting annual capacity of 5 million cubic meters
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 2, Companhia do Pipeline Moçambique-Zimbabwe (CPMZ) launched the Phase II expansion of its refined products pipeline in Nhamatanda, Sofala Province, Mozambique. The project will construct two new pumping stations in Nhamatanda and Messica, near the Zimbabwe border, increasing the pipeline's annual transport capacity from 3 million cubic meters to 5 million cubic meters, with completion scheduled by the end of 2027.
The pipeline operated by CPMZ spans 294 kilometers, extending from the Port of Beira in Mozambique to the Feruka oil depot in Zimbabwe, transporting diesel, gasoline, and aviation fuel. During the construction of the two new pumping stations, the existing pipeline will continue to operate, with no planned interruptions to daily fuel deliveries. This expansion will also be coordinated with the upgrade of the Petrozim Line from Feruka to Harare in Zimbabwe.
CPMZ has already implemented its Phase I expansion. In 2024, new pumping stations in Beira and Maforga were commissioned, increasing the pipeline's annual transport capacity from approximately 2 million cubic meters to 3 million cubic meters. From January to December 2025, CPMZ transported approximately 2.7 million cubic meters of refined products through the pipeline, a year-on-year increase of 16%, setting a new annual throughput record.
Under the current Phase II plan, the new annual transport capacity added by the end of 2027 will be approximately 2 million cubic meters, representing an increase of about 67% over the existing design capacity of 3 million cubic meters. CPMZ is also conducting preliminary studies on a larger-diameter pipeline, with a long-term plan to raise annual transport capacity to approximately 12 million cubic meters to cover transport demand through 2050.
In addition to the expansion of the existing Beira–Feruka pipeline and the Feruka–Harare line, CPMZ is also evaluating options to extend the pipeline further from Harare to Lusaka and the Copperbelt region in Zambia. This extension project is currently still in the evaluation stage.
