Eutelsat to Extend Low-Earth-Orbit Connectivity to Critical Infrastructure and Remote Communities in Greenland

Supported by the European Union, the Government of Greenland, and the Government of Denmark, the project aims to extend reliable connectivity services to rural and remote communities across Greenland.

The project launch ceremony was held today at Eutelsat's ground station in Greenland, attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Prime Minister of Greenland Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen. The EU is funding the project with the aim of strengthening European sovereignty and resilience in critical infrastructure—namely, leveraging European satellite operators to provide essential connectivity in Greenland, ensuring that critical communications in Europe and the Arctic region are supported by Europe's own capabilities.

Under the project framework, Eutelsat will collaborate with Tusass, Greenland's national telecommunications provider and the project's lead partner, to deploy OneWeb Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) connectivity services. Building on their long-standing partnership, the two parties will use this project to extend reliable communication services to remote settlements and critical infrastructure areas where ground-based networks are difficult to deploy due to Greenland's geographic and climatic conditions.

Eutelsat's OneWeb constellation operates in polar orbit, making it well-suited for Greenland and the broader Arctic region, delivering high-speed, low-latency connectivity at high latitudes. As connectivity is extended to more remote communities, the project will support Greenland's digital inclusion priorities and strengthen the resilience and sovereignty of communication infrastructure in this strategic region. The project also integrates broader European satellite capabilities, including HispaSat, with cooperation built on the partners' collaborative framework within SpaceRISE—the consortium delivering the EU's IRIS² secure connectivity program. Eutelsat is a core partner in SpaceRISE and will contribute LEO capabilities to IRIS².
