Albuquerque, USA Launches 6 MW Municipal Photovoltaic Project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The City of Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA has launched a batch of municipal photovoltaic projects, with plans to deploy a total of approximately 6 MW of photovoltaic power generation systems across 8 city-owned facilities. The first construction sites are Eastside Animal Shelter and Highland Pool, with the remaining projects to be advanced in phases through 2027. Sustainability Partners is responsible for providing project capital and coordinating facility installation and long-term maintenance, while Energy Systems Group is responsible for system design.

The 8 construction sites include Eastside Animal Shelter, Highland Pool, West Mesa Aquatic Center, Duke City BMX Park, Isotopes Park, Ken Sanchez Transit Facility, 911 Call Center, and Albuquerque International Sunport. The systems adopt a combination of rooftop photovoltaics and photovoltaic carports, with some sites to be equipped with photovoltaic carports in parking areas.

The project adopts the Infrastructure as a Service model. Sustainability Partners bears the upfront capital investment and is responsible for coordinating installation and subsequent long-term asset maintenance; after the photovoltaic facilities are completed and put into use, the City of Albuquerque pays monthly usage fees. The Albuquerque City Council approved in February 2025 the signing of a master utility service agreement with Sustainability Partners, authorizing it to design, construct, upgrade, and maintain solar infrastructure at city-owned facilities.

In addition to the photovoltaic system, the Albuquerque International Sunport site also plans to be equipped with a battery energy storage system and 10 electric vehicle charging devices to meet the airport's critical electricity needs. The individual photovoltaic capacity, battery configuration, module quantity, and equipment suppliers of the remaining sites have not been separately disclosed in currently available public information.

The City of Albuquerque's 2025 Climate Action Progress document shows that municipal operations electricity demand is approximately 40 MW, of which 25 MW comes from PNM's Solar Direct program and approximately 8 MW comes from the city government's own rooftop photovoltaics. This newly added city-owned facility photovoltaic project is intended to supplement the remaining renewable energy electricity demand.
