Construction of China's First Variable-Speed Pumped Storage Project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Begins Reservoir Impoundment
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On the morning of September 15, the upper and lower reservoirs of the Guangdong Zhaoqing Langjiang Pumped Storage Power Station, the first variable-speed pumped storage project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, simultaneously began impoundment, marking that the project has entered the final sprint stage before commissioning. Simultaneous impoundment of the upper and lower reservoirs is an important milestone in the station's transition from main construction to unit commissioning and commissioning preparation. Subsequent work will continue to advance reservoir impoundment acceptance, electromechanical equipment commissioning, and unit commissioning.
The Guangdong Zhaoqing Langjiang Pumped Storage Power Station is an important regulating power source project for the construction of the new-type power system in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and is also one of the earlier large-scale projects in China to adopt variable-speed pumped storage technology. Compared with conventional fixed-speed pumped storage units, variable-speed units have stronger power regulation capability under pumping conditions, and can more flexibly adapt to the operational needs of rapid changes in grid load and output following the large-scale integration of new energy.
After the project is put into operation, it will undertake functions such as grid peak shaving, valley filling, frequency regulation, phase modulation, energy storage, and emergency reserve, with a focus on serving new energy consumption and stable system operation of the Guangdong power grid and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. As installed capacity of new energy such as wind power and photovoltaics continues to grow, pumped storage power stations can achieve temporal shifting of electrical energy through pumping during valley periods and generating during peak periods, and provide rapid response capability for the power grid.
The simultaneous impoundment of the upper and lower reservoirs this time means that the station's hydraulic structures, reservoir basin seepage control, water conveyance system, and related supporting facilities have entered the final stage before commissioning. Subsequent project priorities will shift to joint commissioning and testing of units, grid-related tests, and phased commissioning, in preparation for the station's formal commercial operation.
